Specialty Dentist Vs. Family Dentist

What is the difference between a specialty dentist and a family dentist?

Sometimes the word “dentist” is all you need to know when speaking of your dental needs. Other times, you will need to see a specialist. For example, if you need to have an issue with a tooth or an area of the mouth that requires special testing or treatment a specialist may need to be involved.

A specialist in dentistry is a master of a specific field in dentistry. After receiving a dental degree, a general dentist can choose to specialize through additional schooling. Depending on the field, specializing may require two to six years beyond the four years required for a general dental license.

Family (general) practitioners accept patients of any age and gender. Family dentistry is not necessary referred to any specific area of dentistry. It focuses on education and dental prevention considering costs and a wide array of treatments.
