Winters in East Tennessee can be pretty bleak, but that doesn’t mean you’re stuck at home. Here at My Family Dentistry, we love to get out and enjoy what Knoxville has to offer, even in the cold, wet winter months.
Knoxville certainly has plenty of indoor entertainment to hold you over until it warms up. If you love to eat and drink, there is an abundance of local restaurants and coffee shops where you can while away the hours with friends and family. One of Dr. Mullins’ favorite places to sit and enjoy a cup of joe is Remedy Coffee in the Old City, where you can use free wi-fi and even swap out a book you’ve finished for one on their shelves. If you’re looking for a new favorite eatery, the Metro Pulse’s searchable online Restaurant Guide is one of the best ways to find exactly what you want.
If relaxing at a cozy coffee shop makes you crave some excitement, check out what’s happening at the historic Bijou and Tennessee theatres, which have been in operation since 1909 and 1928 respectively. Today, Knoxville’s most renowned performance spaces draw musicians from all over the world, as well as film festivals, Broadway musicals, dance companies, and more. Check the calendars on their websites for your favorite artists, and be sure to buy tickets early!
If you’re in the mood for something a little more mellow, you can also browse through the East Tennessee History Center on Gay Street, which features beautiful displays and interactive exhibits packed with historical items, including Davy Crockett’s famous rifle “Betsy.” The ultimate introduction to East Tennessee history, the museum will entertain the whole family, and even offers free admission on Sundays.
If museums are right up your alley, don’t stop there – you should also check out the Knoxville Museum of Art, the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, the Beck Cultural Exchange Center, and the ever-popular hands-on Museum of Appalachia, along with many others.
Of course, outdoor activities aren’t off limits in the winter. In fact, we went up to Cades Cove just this weekend, and you can see pictures on our Facebook page! On clear days, hiking can still be a lot of fun, but be sure to check trail closings and conditions before heading out. Skiers, snowboarders, and kids of all ages can enjoy Ober Gatlinburg all winter, even late in the season, and there’s plenty for sportsmen, if you’re willing to brave the weather. As spring begins to edge closer, Knoxvillians can look forward to the Dogwood Arts Festival and parade, which for many of us signals the coming of spring. Events are spread around the city throughout the month of April; visit the festival website for the full calendar of events.
