Knoxville and the Smoky Mountains have so much to offer, and with spring coming soon, we can’t wait to take advantage of it.
When you’re ready to head outdoors, you couldn’t be in a better area. Whether you want to take your pooch to the dog park or take the kids four-wheeling, there are many places to choose from. Here at My Family Dentistry we love to go hiking in Great Smoky Mountains and are happy to recommend a lot of good hiking trails.
Walk the dog
In addition to Knoxville’s more than 80 parks and 65 miles of greenways and trails, the city boasts 4 dog parks with amenities especially for your canine companion, like large and small dog areas, puppy playgrounds, dog water fountains, and even a dogs-only fire hydrant. Take your pooch to play at the Downtown Dog Park on a Saturday morning, then grab lunch at one of the many restaurants on Gay Street or Market Square that welcomes dogs on the patio.
Hiking
Cades Cove is a must-see for every tourist, but the National Park has so much to offer locals, who can explore the Smokies any time. Everyone we know seems to have advice on the best trails, particularly for avoiding crowds in the summer, and here are some of ours:
Chestnut Top Trail is located only 45 minutes away from Knoxville in peaceful Townsend, TN. Known for the wonderful views of the Little River and a wide variety of wildflowers, this trail attracts photographers and hikers in spring and summer.
Gregory Bald is a high meadow that was used by Cades Cove farmers for cattle grazing. It is perhaps the most famous trail for the spectacular flame azaleas that bloom on the summit from mid to late June.
Cades Cove was founded in early 19th century by the European settlers. Offering a wide variety of historic buildings and plenty of wildlife, the settlement includes the five-mile round trip trail to Abrams Falls and the short Cades Cove Nature Trail. Longer hikes to Thunderhead Mountain and Rocky Top (made famous by the popular song) also begin in the cove.
