Humor may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about the dentist. That is, if you haven’t seen the phenomenally popular YouTube video “David after Dentist,” which was posted in 2009 and has since garnered almost 123 million views.
A dad in Florida took the video of his 7-year-old son on their way home from the dentist after anesthesia to show his wife that David was fine, and uploaded it to YouTube to share it with family members – but the family video quickly became an Internet sensation.
Some people have expressed concerns about the father filming his confused child, and we definitely agree that it’s important to be considerate and protective of people who are recovering, but we’re also glad to hear that proceeds from the video have helped pay for David’s college tuition!
If you haven’t seen it yet, here’s “David after Dentist”:
It’s not only kids who have funny dental stories, though – here are a few comical stories we gathered from real dental patients:
“I work from home and have a very busy life. I have to write everything down so I don’t miss appointments or let things slip. Last summer, I had a dental appointment on my calendar, so I got up and headed into the dentist bright and early and happy to be alive. The staff processed my paperwork and took me back to the exam room. I got all settled in the chair and waited for the impending cleaning to begin. After about 10 minutes, the dentist came in with a look of confusion and asked what I needed. I then found out that my appointment was actually for next month and the entire staff was confused but didn’t want to embarrass me. I was mortified at the time, but looking back it is funny.”
“A few years ago, I moved to a new state and had to see a new dentist to treat an emerging cavity. I’ve never had much anxiety when it comes to visiting the dentist, so I thought I would be fine. The hygienist asked if I wanted medication to numb the area while the dentist was working. I didn’t want to look like a wimp, and it was just a tiny area, so I thought I would be okay. I was, until the actual work began. I screamed, and then sheepishly asked for something to numb the area. The staff got quite a chuckle out of the whole experience, and I still go to that dentist every six months for cleanings. I have learned to ask for medication now when it’s needed.”
