20 Foods to Avoid When Whitening Your Teeth

food-to-avoid

Teeth whitening treatments can be very effective in removing stains and giving you a more dazzling smile.

However, during or shortly after treatment, your teeth may temporarily be more porous and vulnerable to stains. That’s because your protective dental layer is affected by whitening and even regular dental cleanings. It’s nothing to worry about, though! This protective layer also re-forms on its own, but it takes a few days.

Here are 20 foods to avoid when whitening your teeth, but don’t worry—you won’t have to stay away from them for long!

  1. Dark or milk chocolate (white chocolate is fine)
  2. Soy sauce
  3. Tomato sauce
  4. Ketchup
  5. Mustard
  6. Berries
  7. Spinach
  8. Popsicles
  9. Dark marinades
  10. Jelly and jam
  11. Carrots
  12. Chili
  13. Dark soups
  14. Brightly colored chips like Cheetos
  15. Beets
  16. Coffee
  17. Red wine
  18. Tea
  19. Dark-colored soda
  20. Dark-colored fruit juices (grape, tomato, cranberry, orange, etc.)

Permanently Maintaining Your White Teeth

At My Family Dentistry, we offer KöR Whitening Deep Bleaching System, which is safe and yields great results, causing little to no sensitivity. This system works by allowing oxygen to penetrate deep into the enamel of your teeth, without using harsh chemicals. With occasional maintenance treatments, the effects can be permanent.

We’ll create custom whitening trays for you that you’ll wear at home for two weeks—only while you sleep.

For best results, remember to store your KöR Whitening Trays safely, don’t expose them to any heat, wear them every night, and avoid foods that will potentially stain your teeth during whitening.

It’s very important to follow the instructions we give you with your KöR Whitening trays whether you’re having an in-office whitening procedure or at-home procedure.

We want you to permanently maintain a lifetime of your new and beautiful white teeth, so maintenance is key! Just wear your trays at least one night per month for simple maintenance depending on what Dr. Mullins recommends for you.

If you can’t live without your coffee during the treatment (we can relate!), drink it through a straw to minimize contact with your teeth.

You should also temporarily avoid acidic foods and drinks. Many citrus fruits, as well as pickles and soft drinks, fall into this category. They can cause pain in newly whitened teeth, especially if you have receding gums or other issues.

Our KöR Whitening Deep Bleaching System can help transform your smile in a relatively short amount of time and with just a little aftercare. If you’d like to find out more, contact us today at My Family Dentistry.
