Choosing a family dentist is an important decision. Your dental team will be responsible for caring for your family’s dental health, giving you the treatment and information you need.
And at My Family Dentistry, we know a thing or two about comfortable dentistry. Once you find the right dentist, it’s a relationship that will last for years to come.
These considerations are important in helping you choose the dentist that’s right for you and your family:
Atmosphere and ‘Chair-side’ Manner
Make an appointment for a consultation, which will serve as an indication of the kind of experience and relationship you’ll have if you become a regular patient. Notice the atmosphere in the office.
You should be welcomed, and the wait should be reasonable. You should feel as though you’re important and not an intrusion.
Once you meet with the dentist, do you feel comfortable? A family dentist and his or her staff should answer your questions honestly, patiently and knowledgeably. Their “chair-side” manner should be polite, putting you at ease.
Professional Expertise and Involvement
Family dentists who continue their education above and beyond what’s strictly necessary show a commitment to their profession. My Family Dentistry’s very own Dr. Mullins completed his bachelor’s at West Virginia University before earning his dental degree at the WVU School of Dentistry.
He then went on to complete his general practice residency at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. A dentist should also be a member of the American Dental Association and other state and local organizations.
This additional training and education ensures that dentists are knowledgeable about advanced procedures and keep up to date on the latest in technology.
Knowledge and Experience in Kids’ Dental Care
Treating children can sometimes require a gentler touch than may be needed with adults. You’ll want a dentist who has experience in treating children, both for the additional knowledge and the special care that can be required.
A family dentist should be able to put your child at ease while explaining procedures at age-appropriate levels. This is particularly important if your kid is nervous about the dentist.
Private Versus Chain
You might prefer a private, locally owned dental practice over a chain of dentists’ offices. Dentists who own their own offices usually have more control over everything from the procedures they perform to the prices they charge.
Since you can see the same dentist every time, each visit will be more consistent. Here at My Family Dentistry, we would love to start a long-lasting friendship with you!
