What Is Invisalign? The Key To Straighter Teeth in Knoxville

For many people, the solution for misaligned teeth can seem worse than the problem. Metal braces can be bulky and draw unwanted attention. They also require constant retightening which can be unpleasant. If you have crooked teeth, it may be time to consider Invisalign. What is Invisalign and how does it work

Invisalign is a unique brand of clear plastic aligners for your teeth. They gradually move your teeth over time, readjusting them into the proper position. Those with mild or moderate cases of crooked teeth are good candidates for treatment. They’re removable, allowing you to brush and floss to protect your oral health. The time it takes to see results can vary on a case-to-case basis.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a form of orthodontic treatment that straightens teeth. Also known as invisible braces, Invisalign clear aligners give you a beautiful smile without the need for bulky, embarrassing metal braces.

How does Invisalign work?

First, we start with a consultation to see if you’re a good candidate for Invisalign. This process includes:

  • Taking X-rays
  • Making dental impressions
  • Creating a 3-D digital map of your mouth

We are then able to create a series of custom plastic trays similar to mouthguards that gradually move your teeth into the correct position. Your series of trays are custom-molded to fit your unique teeth. You will receive a new set of trays every two weeks until the process is complete.

Each tray has been designed to apply pressure in just the right spots to provide the correct alignment for your teeth. As Invisalign adjusts your tooth alignment, it will be transforming your smile into one that you can’t wait to show off. In most cases, your Invisalign aligners will have composites buttons that help move the teeth into the correct position. They’re placed at specific pressure points and are removed at the end of treatment.

Am I a good candidate for Invisalign?

Unfortunately, not everyone will be a good candidate for Invisalign, and braces may be necessary for more serious cases. Fortunately, these clear aligner trays can still help with mild to moderate orthodontic issues, including crowding and spacing.

This includes bite issues such as:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Open bite
  • Crossbite

We evaluate every individual case to see if they are good candidates for Invisalign. If not, we are also able to do traditional braces in-house.

Benefits of Invisalign

There are multiple treatment options for straighter teeth, including metal braces and even surgery. However, they are for more severe cases of crooked teeth and bite issues. With Invisalign, you get straighter teeth with much less invasive treatment.

For one thing, they don’t hurt nearly as much as braces or surgery. Braces require regular retightening in order to be effective. While you’ll end up with similar results, the process can be time-consuming and even painful.

The fear of pain is a major reason why people don’t seek treatment for their crooked and misaligned teeth. But with Invisalign, you receive the same results as traditional braces with reduced discomfort. Achiness and discomfort are common at the beginning of your treatment plan, but it’s considerably less than other options.

Another benefit of Invisalign is that they’re practically invisible. Unlike metal braces, Invisalign aligners are clear so you can straighten your teeth without anyone else knowing. This can give you the confidence to keep smiling knowing that your teeth are getting straighter every day.

How long does Invisalign take to work?

To get the most out of your treatment plan, you’ll need to wear your aligners for 22 hours a day. You can take them off for short periods to brush, floss, or for other necessary reasons. Just put them back on as soon as possible. Having a consistent wear-time will help to ensure they continue to gradually move your teeth to the correct position.

Treatment times can vary depending on your individual case, but most patients begin to see results in anywhere from 6 to 18 months. While this can seem like a long time, metal braces can take anywhere from 1 to 3 years in some cases.
