Long lasting restorations
Crowns are made to give you back the form of your tooth that was lost. When did you lose it? Most people have had their first molars filled many times throughout their life. And occasionally, the fillings get so large that the tooth loses its ability to hold itself together. And we have ways of measuring how much is too much. It could be a small crack or craze line or a filling that doesn’t look healthy anymore, and the tooth is just losing its ability to hold itself together. You’re losing the functional ability to be able to chew.
So crowns are a way to cap over a tooth and strengthen it, in some ways, give you back what you lost. The great news is that it doesn’t have to be done with goopy impressions anymore. The technology we have here at My Family Dentistry allows us to do digital scanning for your crowns. What’s great about that is that we can provide you with a service that is more comfortable. All of our crowns today for single-tooth replacement are ceramics. And we have, typically, a couple of products that we choose based on the color of your teeth. We can do custom shading and things like that to make your tooth look real. When you walk out of the office we want patients to not even recognize that they really had a crown done. It looks like a tooth and it should function like a tooth.
So crowns really are teeth that have been strengthened by encapsulating the tooth that was once broken down. Whether it was by functional break or whether it was because the fillings got too big, you can cap teeth and do it in a way that looks really good, functions really good, and really disappears in your mouth.
If you’re missing a tooth and for some reason we have to crown a tooth on either side, a bridge is going to replace the missing tooth. So it’s essentially three crowns in one. Some people have longer bridges than that. But in most cases, typically, in our practice, we see three-unit bridges. And so those are done in the same way. Metal-free scanning technology, and we deliver a metal-free restoration that’s custom colored to your teeth and really could last a very long time.
